The norms of the Office were formed by men of character.

Even if an elected President was somewhat deficient in his own character, as long as he didn’t publicly violate the norms of Presidential behavior, he was presumed to be of sufficient character to perform. His policies, then, were to be assessed more for the public good or harm they caused rather than as a reflection of his temperament.

The norms of the office were not codified. Human decency & dignity were presumed.

All of that has been abandoned.
